I get a lot of questions regarding kids and chiropractic care ... and considering I'm a new mom (hence the fact it's been awhile since our last blog post ;( ), I thought I'd share a few reasons why chiropractic maybe a good choice for infants....
Birth is unavoidably stressful for your little one, which alone can cause a disturbance in the nervous system. Because of this, newborns are especially susceptible to spinal misalignment and stress on the nerves. This may not be apparent initially, but if left uncorrected, it could cause problems in the years to come. If your child’s body is stressed in any way, normal spinal alignment may be lost, and growth and development may be altered. This may show up in many forms, such as scoliosis, pain, asthma, or a digestive disorder. To ensure that your child’s body is functioning properly, it is best to have their spine checked as a normal part of postnatal care with mom. If you have older children who have not had their spines checked, the sooner they are examined the more likely they are to reach their full healthy potential. The earlier spinal subluxations are corrected, the more quickly an individual can begin to enjoy true health. The short of it...
1. they grow upside down for 9months
2. they undergo a lot of trauma during the birthing process (vaginal birth AND cesarean birth)
3. they were confined to small living quarters for 40 weeks gestation
5. Projectile vomiting
6. failure to rotate head both directions
8. fever (not wanting to medicate your infant?? call a chiropractor today)
AND MANY MORE!

Although chiropractors care for more than just back pain, many patients visit chiropractors looking for relief from this pervasive condition. In fact, 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time.
A few interesting facts about back pain:
The back is a complicated structure of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles. You can sprain ligaments, strain muscles, rupture disks, and irritate joints, all of which can lead to back pain. While sports injuries or accidents can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements—for example, picking up a pencil from the floor— can have painful results. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain. Back pain can also directly result from disease of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss.
Manipulation as a Treatment for Back Problems
Used primarily by Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) for the last century, manipulation has been largely ignored by most others in the health care community until recently. Now, with today's growing emphasis on treatment and cost effectiveness, manipulation is receiving more widespread attention.
Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a safe and effective spine pain treatment. It reduces pain, decreases medication, rapidly advances physical therapy, and requires very few passive forms of treatment, such as bed rest.5
In fact, after an extensive study of all currently available care for low back problems, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research—a federal government research organization—recommended that low back pain sufferers choose the most conservative care first. And it recommended spinal manipulation as the only safe and effective, drugless form of initial professional treatment for acute low back problems in adults.6
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) urges you to make an informed choice about your back care. To learn more about how chiropractic manipulation may help you, contact a Doctor of Chiropractic in your area. Search our online database of ACA members to find a doctor of chiropractic near you.

I get numerous inquires on a weekly basis on chiropractic for kids, HOW SAFE IS IT? WHY WOULD KIDS NEED CHIROPRACTIC? WHAT CAN CHIROPRACTIC DO FOR KIDS? FOR EAR INFECTIONS? FOR COLIC?
The short answer is yes, chiropractic IS SAFE for kids and they actually need it more so then adults. Imagine if you stood on your head for 9 minutes... do you think your neck would hurt? Think about growing upside down for 9 months! All of that pressure on the nerves and neck build up. AND THE BIRTHING PROCESS IS TRAUMATIC ENOUGH! Even if it is a C-section baby. The nerves in the neck control majority of our bodies functioning (including gas, digestion and absorption, neck rotation (necessary for development, feeding), etc. etc). Most of the pressure that builds up affects majority of what our little ones need in order to function.
The chiropractic adjustment in kids is different then it is for adults. Children's bones have not fully developed and are not fused, not to mention muscle tone may not be fully developed... thus allowing the bones to slide right back into place with a gentle adjustment. I don't adjust our kids the same way I adjust my adult patients. With the proper training and techniques, chiropractors have been known to help MANY childhood ailments (ear aches, ear infections, colic, acid reflux, projectile vomiting, bed-wetting, etc.). The only way for our children to communicate with us is to cry... that only tells us that they are unhappy, don't feel good, are hungry, need to change their diaper, etc. When swaddling, holding tight for long periods of time, lack of sleep, failure to eat, and stress on mom and dad becomes too much, and they still don't stop crying, bring them in for a spinal evaluation. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE?
Still need some of your questions answered... call Julie today to set up your complimentary consultation with either Dr. Kleene or Weber. We want you to feel confident in seeking care for your precious child. We promise to treat them as our own... we are parents too, we know how important our kids are to us!
I can't wait until Tyler and I's little one arrives in February so we can post a video of his/her first adjustment. Stay tuned!

We have been blessed with an increase in new patient referrals this month COMING FROM OUR CURRENT PATIENTS! It is truly a blessing and a great form of flattery when we get a new patient referral from a happy, satisfied patient. Word-of-mouth referrals help us continue to treat the community, help others reduce their pain and symptoms and GET BACK TO ENJOYING LIFE! While Dr. Weber and I embrace the wellness model whole-heartedly, we understand most of our patients that come to see us are in pain... and want just that, PAIN-RELIEF! Occasionally we'll get that patient who is ready to make major life changes to better their health (such as quit smoking, join a gym, eat better, etc.) and we are more then happy to be apart of your life changing WELLNESS team! However, we want our patients to know, or those that are thinking about trying chiropractic, that we VALUE their CURRENT health care goals. We know some patients have been under the impression that once they try a chiropractor once, THEY'LL BE TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS AND IT'S GOING TO COST THEM $5,000 A YEAR and they're going to have to come every other day for the rest of their life JUST TO feel good.... NOT AT BACK IN LINE! We don't offer the same treatment plan FOR EVERY SINGLE PATIENT.... we treat the patients main concerns from headaches, to back-aches, to pulled hamstrings and golfer's elbow. We work efficiently and effectively to alleviate pain and get you to feeling great. THEN, AFTER WE'VE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS, we can discuss WELLNESS treatment plans. (and yes, we can create plans in the $5,000/year budget, have a plethora of spinal wellness adjustments, nutrition consoling, acupuncture, ion detox, supplementation, TO KEEP YOU FEELING GOOD, etc. etc. ;) - BUT, IT'S ONLY AFTER WE'VE DONE OUR JOB CORRECTING your initial problem.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... We at Back in Line Family Chiropractic will never waste your:
1. Your time
2. Your money
3. Your health
We will always be very forthcoming with your prognosis (how many visits we expect it'll take for your condition), your care throughout the treatment (making sure you are seeing progress and feeling better and improvement along the way), what to change in your daily routine (if you sleep on your stomach, we're going to tell you you need to stop that in order to facilitate pain relief and decrease in symptoms and improve your life), if you need to invest in new shoes, or new mattress, etc. etc. We will never withhold care from you nor will we over-treat you. If we don't see the results we expect to (within a reasonable time frame for the condition) we'll investigate other treatment options with you. We may want to run further imaging studies such as an MRI or CT scan, run some lab work, refer and/or co-manage with physical therapy or other medical specialists. We offer a dynamic array of services and we'll use our best judgement in helping you find the care you deserve. We will err on the side of least invasive first...moving towards more invasive. You'll never hear us say... "TOO BAD MR. SMITH, you're just going to have to live with the pain..."
If you have other questions about our clinic or how we may help you or a loved one, please give us a call and set up a complimentary consultation! 892-3363
ALL IN GOOD HEALTH,
Dr. CJ Kleene, DC, CCAc
It's amazing how many opportunities to be healthy are presented in front of us on a daily basis. I see them everywhere... however, it can be somewhat misleading... for Instance... ZERO TRANS FATS on a bag of Doritos or a LeanCousine meal, containins "anti-oxidants" on a can of diet 7-up... but really, are they healthy for us? Of course not, but we gotta hand it to their marketing team on helping us feel better about some of poor eating habits.
These leads me to today's discussion... one of the many great things about chiropractic is that there is OVER 200 chiropractic techniques out there, MANY OF US PRACTICE SEVERAL DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES and HAVE MANY "TOOLS" IN OUR TRAINING TO BEST SUIT OUR PATIENTS NEEDS. Some Chiropractors chose to master one or two of these techniques and use it on every patient... AND they get great results. That's awesome! The more of us out there that practice differently allows us (chiropractors) to help more and more individuals... In fact, I find it necessary that many of us practice different from one chiropractor to another and NO ONE TECHNIQUE WORKS FOR EVERYONE. If we were all MADE 100% THE SAME, then we would only need ONE TECHNIQUE... however, no one is ever "textbook" ... some of us respond differently to the same types of care....
If you're not already a patient of Back in Line, It is important to know two things about chiropractic... their are STRAIGHTS (those chiropractors ONLY PRACTICING THE ART OF CHIROPRACTIC, They ONLY know how to adjust you... AND I hate to sterotype, they are VERY ANTI-MEDICAL) and then we have the DIRTY MIXERS (THAT'D BE US, AT BACK IN LINE, WE PRACTICE THE ART, PHILOSOPHY, AND SCIENCE, of Chiropractic)... we are great adjustors, know the importance of having removed joint dysfunction, aka, "subluxations", and practice proven scientific evidence on how to lead a lifestyle minimizing the reoccurrence and frequency of those "subluxations". WE are not ANTI-MEDICINE, however, we are PRO-LESS-INVASIVE FIRST (there is a time and place for everything, ask me about my friend, STRAIGHT chiropractor whose son is 30% deaf because he refused to put tubes in his child's ears..., however, a 15month old pt at BIL resolved her ear infections with chiropractic adjustments forgoing ear tubes - It's important for us to know when we can go the chiropractic route and to know when more invasive measures need to be considered. Like I said, TIME AND PLACE FOR EVERYTHING). Some of our patients come to us in bad shape, just got in a bad car accident, currently under-going chemotherapy, have a birth defect, etc, and need to have coordinated care with their medical physicians. We love working with the medical community as we have a great opportunity to see the need for both forms of healthcare for our patients.
While reading a recent post by a chiropractic colleague on facebook bashing those of us that implement THERAPY in addition to the CHIROPRACTIC and questing how we can "justify" using THERAPIES in practice... (YES, I HOPE YOU CAN HEAR MY STEPPING ON MY SOAP-BOX ;))...
There are a ton of us Chiropractors (straights, and mixers) out in the field helping millions of people feel great and live a better life. When Back in Line Family Chiropractic & WELLNESS was created... our goal was NEVER JUST ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC... it was more about a HEALTHIER LIFE and how we can help our patients to the best of our training and ability. When I asked a 3rd grade class how HEALTH was defined to them I got MANY DIFFERENT RESPONSES... from good sleep, good eating habits (Ironically, one kid did mention going to the chiropractor :) - yes, that child was a patient), exercise, time with friends and family, feeling good, HEADACHE FREE, pain free, etc. etc. Please note, Chiropractic principles say that a "healthy" individual is someone who is "subluxation free". While I agree with that statement, there are MANY MANY things we can do on a daily basis to help prevent or reduce those subluxations for occurring. (In case you don't know, a subluxation is a bone or a joint that has not in proper alignment causing pain, nerve interference, and overall body dysfunction. Chiropractors remove subluxations when delivering adjustments). Those things include proper nutrition, decent exercise, rest and sleep, spiritual well-being, financial well-being CHIROPRACTIC adjustments, soft tissue care, etc.
We at Back in Line KNOW that spinal alignment is ABOVE ALL, the most important in working towards optimum health, HOWEVER, we use NUMEROUS therapies that REDUCE TREATMENT TIME, FREQUENCY, AND TOTAL OUT-OF-POCKET expenses for our patients. We pride ourselves in being A PATIENT-CENTERED CLINIC implementing evidence-based practices. We don't see EVERY SINGLE PATIENT ON THE SAME TREATMENT PLAN. We love that our clinic is individual focused.... (the 8 day old, the 8 year old, 48 year old, and 88 year old DO NOT GET THE SAME TREATMENT PLAN (same # of expected visits to "feel" better - some chiropractors put every patient on the same # of visits), they get a treatment plan based on their needs... pain relief, symptom relief, AND THEN WE MOVE TO WELLNESS AND THE TRUE CHIROPRACTIC PLAN OF SUBLUXATION FREE PLANS). Some of our patients get CHIROPRACTIC only, while some will get a combination of chiropractic adjustments, myofascial therapies, and muscle stimulation, while others may just need a few chiro, and acupuncture treatments. It all depends on the individual. Back to the PRIDE in Back in Line Family Chiropractic & Wellness, we WILL NEVER WASTE...
1. OUR PATIENT'S TIME
2. OUR PATIENT'S MONEY
3. OUR PATIENT'S HEALTH
If studies, research, and evidence didn't prove effectiveness of success we wouldn't use the therapies to supplement what chiropractic does for our health. WE KNOW that together, therapies and chiropractic do MORE when combined in one office visit for our patients then Chiropractic alone. We will always continue to work in the best interest of our patients....
At the end of the day... our goal is to love and to serve. There are great STRAIGHT chiropractors out there as well as GREAT DIRTY MIXERS for chiropractors. The STIFF STRAIGHTS, and the DIRTY MIXERS have been seen amazing results... no doubt about it.
Of course we love our take on health best....
ALL IN GOOD HEALTH!

In response to some recent questions from current patients, we will not be offering a "special" or "reduced fee" service through any of the local and national email based marketing programs. While we can appreciate a discount or anything to save money, especially in this economy, we are legally obligated the maintain and hold reasonable and customary charges as we are contracted providers with some of the states leading insurance companies (Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Health Care, Medicare/Medicaid, etc). You will not see an ethical medical office offering free orthopedic exams or free surgeries. Nor would you see a brain surgeon offering a free BRAIN SCAN AT THE MALL; we agree with the law and strive to maintain a higher standard of care. Any of the services we offer are covered by most insurance companies and if not, we do have reasonable payment plans, and "time of service", "financial hardship policies and pricing" that is legal within the constraints of our contract with major health insurance companies.
Acupuncture, supplementation, nutrition, massage therapy, can be discounted as most insurance contacts do not cover these services as they are deemed "not medically necessary". Chiropractic exams, x-rays, and adjustments however are covered by these insurance companies and therefore, illegal to offer a discount lower then that established by the insurance company. (*consultations are exempt, not a covered service)
Unfortunately, those offices who accept insurance (cash only offices are not in this category) and offer these discounts are breaking the law and may see fines and jail time if they continue to offer discounts against their contract. Those chiropractors offering the services also may get kicked OUT-OF-NETWORK for violating those contracts, leaving their patients to have to pay even more in the end.
Our office prides ourself on offering top, quality care, and following within the guidelines of our established contracts. We will not over-bill, over-treat, (or under-bill) our patients or third party payors (BCBS, United, Medicare/Medicaid) as we strive to maintain ethics in every aspect of healthcare.

As a current board member of the Iowa Chiropractic Society, here is the most recent stance published on the position :ICS's Position Statement on Advertising of Discounts and Free Services
It is the position of the Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS) that, because of many payor contractual restrictions, ICS members should not advertise the provision of free services. The offering of free services, heavily discounted service and the routine waivers of third-party payor deductibles and co-insurance is an unacceptable and possibly illegal method of patient inducement and may be in violation of Medicare/Medicaid regulations and provider contracts. Further, the offering of free services and heavily discounted services may result in reduced contractual payment rates where third-party payor contracts call for reimbursement on the basis of usual and customary fees.
Members should review their own advertising policies and procedures in light of this position. ICS recognizes that in a competitive health care environment, members often engage in various methods of practice promotion and advertising to establish and maintain a viable practice. ICS does not seek to restrict the rights of its members to market their practices, but rather strives to ensure member compliance with Medicare/Medicaid regulations and provider contracts

Active Release technique for treatment of Pain, numbness and impaired movement-NYC soft tissue treatmentA recent great article aboutActive Release techniquefrom Health Alert, If you don’t already subscribe you should, Dr. Bruce West has some very informative information in the newsletters.
I have found ART to a tremendously effective treatment protocol for dealing with soft tissue injuries. I use it daily in my NYC Physical therapy office
SECRET TREATMENT OF THE MONTH from Health Alert.
PAIN, NUMBNESS, AND IMPAIRED MOVEMENT -
ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE (ART)
There are more misdiagnoses, more wrong treatments and over-treatments, more useless surgical interventions, more powerful prescribed painkillers, more missed work and school, more waste of health care funds, and more chronic disabilities due to soft tissue problems than most all other pain syndromes combined.
The soft tissues that cause all this pain and suffering are the non-bony tissues of the body, usually associated with joints – such as muscles, muscle sheaths, tendons, and ligaments. Soft tissues are frequently damaged through injuries and accidents, repetitive motion, and constant pressure or tension. If they do not heal properly, they form scars, fibrosis (tough, fibrous tissue), or adhesions that can entrap nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues. These adhesions cause severe pain, numbness, joint dysfunctions, muscle impairment to near paralysis, movement problems, and even complete disability.
When you develop a soft tissue problem with adhesions, the first symptom is pain. It can be head, hand, wrist, arm, jaw, neck, back, hip, leg, knee, ankle, foot, rib, or other pain. Examples are headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, tendonitis of any joint, backaches of all kinds, and other diagnostic pain syndromes.
The trip to the doctor will usually begin with some painkillers to see if the pain goes away. This is usually followed by x0rays or scans. The abnormalities found on x-rays and scans (including MRIs) are often diagnosed as the cause of the problem when they are not. Almost everyone has abnormalities that show up on these tests, including spinal disk disease, herniated disk, arthritis, and the like. These are rarely the underlying cause of the problem. Rather, they are most frequently inconsequential joint abnormalities that are best left alone.
If the pain continues, you may end up headed for some form of surgery to treat the “abnormality” on your scan. With soft tissue injury and adhesions, this is an expensive, dangerous, and useless procedure – with the disappointing surgery results proving that your diagnosis was completely incorrect. In fact, scans are almost completely incapable of locating soft tissue adhesions that cause most of these chronic, agonizing problems. As with all things in health, the underlying cause of the problem must be addressed. And that means removing the adhesions or fibrosis. Enter the active release technique.
ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE (ART)
I suffered an injury to my heel that really laid me up. I simply could not walk well, and athletics were out of the question. For 6 months I pursued all types of treatment to no avail. Then I went to a chiropractor who was an expert in the active release technique. He quickly discovered that I had probably stepped on a rock on the beach, developed a soft tissue injury in the arch of my foot that did not heal properly, and then formed a scar. The scar was interfering with the nerves and tendons in the bottom of my foot, referring the pain into my heel. The ART treatment used pressure on the adhesion while I forcefully moved my foot through its range of motion – breaking free the tissues from the adhesion. After four treatments my pain was gone.
Although I am no longer in any pain, I now see an ART expert (Dr. Jay Cook, Monterey, CA) three times a week to determine if I have old soft tissue injuries that are impairing my physical performance. We have already cleared out adhesions in my legs and calves, resulting in my ability to jump higher. We will together be checking for and clearing out any adhesions throughout my back, neck, shoulders, and arms.
The type of soft tissue injury and resultant adhesion I had is extremely common - not always in the arch of the foot, but in any joint. And this could have easily resulted in $50,000 or more in drugs, surgical expenses, and more – all of which would have been completely useless. It could have resulted in disability, limping (which would have eventually affected my other joints), arthritis, and most important for me, a forced retirement from physical activity and athletics. In other words, this kind of injury could have ruined my life.
That is how serious soft tissue injuries are. And literally millions suffer from them – getting wrong diagnoses, wrong treatments, and over-treatments. Still very few doctors talk about these injuries. And why would they? Not one in 10,000 physicians understands these injuries. There are no diagnostic scans, x-rays, or images that can detect these injuries. And almost no orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon understands them. So unless you are lucky enough to run across an article like this, if you suffer a soft tissue injury with scarring or adhesions, you are up a creek without a paddle. You would be wasting your time on standard medical care, drugs, or even surgery.
What to Do
If you develop chronic pain, especially in the joints – and if standard, conservative, treatment, including chiropractic therapy, fails – you must:
Consider that you have a soft tissue injury.
Get to an ART expert. If you are recommended for surgery, get to an ART expert first, no matter how long you have suffered.
Find one of these experts by going to www.activereleasetechniques.com(techniques with an “s”). Click on “Find a Provider” to find experts near you.
If you are in NYC visit our office at Active release NYC You will see that each doctor has the courses he/she has taken displayed in emblems (with initials inside the emblem) after his/her name. You can click on each of these to see if this doctor is an expert in the problem that you have. If you absolutely cannot use a computer, call 1-888-396-2727 and ask to find a doctor who specializes in your problem.
The first treatment or two can be a little uncomfortable or even painful, but it is not unbearable. Treatments usually take 15 to 30 minutes each. Many people experience some relief after the first treatment. You will generally know if you can be helped within six treatments. Most people who are cured with ART have already been unsuccessfully treated by other health care providers.
Chronic soft tissue injury with adhesion and fibrosis can eventually cause bony problems as well. It is not unusual for arthritis to develop subsequent to these types of injuries simply because the joint can no longer function properly. In all chronic cases, you can get better results in you also incorporate nutrition for joints.
If you have chronic injuries, use the following Standard Process nutrition products while getting ART treatments: Calcified Wafers (6-12 daily) and Glucosamine Synergy (3-4 daily). Also be sure to take Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil (3 capsules daily) to get adequate vitamin D. And if you have arthritis, take X-Factor Gold High Vitamin Butter Oil (3-12 capsules daily 0 to ensure you get an adequate quantities for the anti-stiffness factor, also known as Activator X (or the Wulzen Factor).
Do not give up. You can be helped. Most individuals do not need surgery. Fin an expert near you, start treatments, use the proper nutrition, and start planning on your new, pain-free life. Now that is a real miracle treatment of the month.
